The canopy is made of hundreds of quick slashing strokes in green, teal, and olive, with flecks of orange, red, and blue thrown through them, and it sweeps across the top of the board like it is being pushed by a strong wind. The trunk is thick and split into heavy brown slabs, with broad planks of root and branch fanning out at its base. Behind it a thin band of orange and blue marks the horizon under a pale, pinkish sky scribbled with red.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: 300; margin-bottom: 20px;\"\u003eUnder the tree the ground does something unexpected. Instead of grass there is a field of thin vertical drips and posts in green, blue, yellow, and pink, standing in rows like a fence, a crowd, or a vineyard. The paint runs down the surface in places, so the whole lower half looks like it is still wet and still moving.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: 300; margin-bottom: 20px;\"\u003eIt would be easy to call this a landscape, but the tree is not sitting still. It feels more like a portrait of a tree in the middle of a storm or a very good day, depending on how you read the colors. The surface is thick and layered, with scraped, dripped, and drawn paint, and the board makes it feel solid. He later worked as a portrait artist in Jackson Square in New Orleans, and in Tampa he spent years as a nurse in the city’s jails and a psychiatric hospital. He did not come to painting through galleries or art school. He came to it by watching people, and it shows.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 300; color: #111111; line-height: 1.85; margin-bottom: 14px;\"\u003eFor thirteen years he painted at Artist Unlimited alongside artists with master’s degrees from around the world, learned from master painter Ray Paul, and taught drawing with live models.
