She calls herself an expressionist who paints what she feels rather than what she sees. A New Orleans native now based in California, Fontaine-Barr builds her color-drenched Southern landscapes from memory and imagination, putting reference photos away almost immediately so the scene can drift into something the camera never caught. She stepped away from painting for years to raise her daughter, and still remembers the drive home from her first session back, calling her husband to say, "I have my art-eyes back. I can see again."
