Biography

A stone carving and bronze sculpture practice built over five decades.

Born in 1948 in Brooklyn, New York, Ailene Fields came to sculpture through curiosity rather than convention. She graduated from Lehman College in 1973 with a degree in English and Greek Mythology, and spent years as a self-taught potter before her work with clay led her somewhere more permanent. In 1980 she studied the human figure with master sculptor Bruno Lucchesi at the New School for Social Research in New York City, and Lucchesi, recognizing something in her work, sent her directly to the Sculpture Center to continue her training.
What began as an apprenticeship became a life's practice. Ailene mastered stone carving and bronze casting, developing a language rooted in mythology, fairy tales, nature, and the quiet dignity of animal forms. Her work does not illustrate these subjects. It inhabits them.
Today she co-owns The Compleat Sculptor in New York City, one of the largest sculpture suppliers in the world, where she continues to teach. She is the co-founder of the Skylands Museum of Art in Lafayette, New Jersey, which she opened in 2023 alongside gallerist Neil Zukerman and has continued with her husband Dr. David Fields following Zukerman's passing. The museum has nine gallery rooms and a sculpture garden, focused entirely on mythology, fairy tales, and the human figure.
On Her Practice
"Carving stone is different from most other forms of sculpture. It is a process of finding what has been trapped within since time immemorial and allowing it to reveal itself to the world."
