Original oil painting by Blake Emory · Painter, sculptor, and filmmaker · Available at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery, Tampa, Florida · Ships worldwide

Four elephants rest in a low, glowing field under an enormous sky of gold and orange clouds, with the corners of the canvas darkening to brown and gray. The elephants are painted in deep teal and green with yellow light catching their backs and heads. On the left, one stands with its trunk curled around a smaller elephant lying at its feet, the little one tucked in against it. In the middle, a third sits upright with its eyes closed and its trunk curled in toward its chest. On the right, the fourth sits a little behind the others, head turned and trunk hanging low with the tip curled up.

Nobody in this painting is doing anything, and that is the point. There is no hunt, no march, no water to cross. The herd has stopped, and the sky is putting on the biggest show it has. It could be sunrise or sunset, and the painting does not tell you which, so you decide if the day is starting or ending.

Elephants have long been treated as the ones who remember, the elders who carry the history of the herd. Calling these four prophets fits. They are not speaking. They are sitting still in the light, and the stillness is the message. The mother with her trunk around the calf is the part people tend to stay with the longest.

Collector’s Note

At 60 by 70 inches, this is a statement piece. It is built for a large wall, a living room, a lobby, an office, or a restaurant, anywhere the room has space for the glow to spread. The yellows and greens are rich in person in a way a photograph flattens, so a virtual viewing or an in-person visit is worth it.

About the Artist

Blake Emory was born in 1983 and raised in Plant City, Florida, in a family of artists, inventors, and musicians. Alongside his brother James, creativity was the family language: music, theater, sculpture, set design, and mural and canvas painting, all treated as one continuous practice. He sold his first drawing in third grade and has not really stopped since.

Painting and sculpture became the throughline. He debuted his Zebra Love Collection at Art Basel Miami in 2014, made the life-size Babe Ruth sculpture now at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, and has painted large murals across Tampa Bay and New Mexico. His giant octopus mural at Cage Brewing in St. Petersburg, painted with Guillo Pérez 3, was named by Creative Loafing Tampa Bay among the area’s must-see murals.

He also works in film. His short The Ethereal: Episode I was shown at the Salvador Dalí Museum and premiered at Tampa Theater in 2025, and a second episode is in production. He lives and works in St. Petersburg, Florida, and his original paintings and sculpture are available through Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery.
