Color is doing the real storytelling here, not just holding the composition together. That hot field of magenta, the gold breaking through in one corner, the figure rendered in the same warm yellow as the space around it, this is Guillo working in a real German Expressionist tradition, closer to Emil Nolde than to a naturalistic color palette. The color isn't describing the scene. Where Guillo's Bauhaus Budō pieces lead with geometric structure, In Repose leads with color used the way the German Expressionists used it, as the actual emotional register of the piece, not a backdrop to it. Both approaches come from the same expressionist core, this one simply lets color carry the weight on its own.

About the Artist

Guillo Pérez 3 is a Dominican-American expressionist oil painter, born in Santo Domingo and raised in Queens, New York. Third-generation heir to one of the Dominican Republic's most respected painting lineages, grandson of Maestro Guillo Pérez and son of master painter Willy Pérez.

His work is held in collections across 48 countries on six continents, including a permanent place in the Skylands Museum of Art alongside Dalí and Picasso. Named a "Star Maker" by The New York Times, with exhibitions at Art Basel Miami Beach and ESP Gallery Chelsea. He founded galleries in Miami and New York before co-founding Marcolina's in Tampa.
