Original mixed media on canvas by Greg Latch · Painter and mixed media artist · Available at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery, Tampa, Florida · Ships worldwide
Abstract No. 2 is a green painting that never lets you settle. Wide ribbons of green loop, cross, and knot across the whole canvas, and every one is outlined in a thin white line, so the surface reads a bit like stained glass that has been twisted. Through the gaps, small shards of bright blue and a few patches of lime and olive break through. The green itself is dragged on dry, so the weave of the canvas shows through in scratches and pale streaks.
You can read it a few ways. From a distance it is a thicket, vines or kelp or hair, all in motion. Come closer and it turns into a maze with no entrance and no exit, a line you follow until it doubles back on you. The blue shows up as sky through leaves, or as water under the green, and which one you see depends on the day.
There is no subject to find here, and that is on purpose. Greg says his work is not really about the image, it is about what the image can say in more than one way, and this painting is as close to that idea as it gets. The white lines are drawn, the green is scraped and layered, and the more time you give it, the more it moves.

Collector’s Note
At 48 by 60 inches, Abstract No. 2 is a statement piece, tall enough to anchor a wall above a sofa, a console, or a bed. The greens and blues are calming without being quiet, and they work well in a room with plants, wood, or white walls. The surface is layered and scraped, so it changes with the light, and seeing it in person or on a virtual viewing shows you far more than a photograph can.

About the Artist
Greg Latch was born in Mississippi and studied acting and fine art at the University of Mississippi. He later worked as a portrait artist in Jackson Square in New Orleans, and in Tampa he spent years as a nurse in the city’s jails and a psychiatric hospital. He did not come to painting through galleries or art school. He came to it by watching people, and it shows.
For thirteen years he painted at Artist Unlimited alongside artists with master’s degrees from around the world, learned from master painter Ray Paul, and taught drawing with live models. He builds his surfaces with oils, markers, and a range of knives, layering until the canvas turns almost sculptural, and he works from spontaneous drawings and mismatched imagery.
His work sits between portraiture and abstraction, and he says himself that it is not really about the image. He was featured in the Persona exhibition at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery alongside Blake Emory, Guillo Pérez 3, and Mark Rendini. He lives and works in Tampa, Florida.
