Original bronze sculpture by Gina Novendstern · Available at Marcolina's Fine Arts Gallery, Tampa, Florida · Ships worldwide

No head. No face. A figure caught mid-motion, one hand pressed to a knee, weight settled into a hip, mounted directly to the wall so it seems to emerge from the surface rather than sit in front of it.

Gina Novendstern's figures are never complete on purpose, a head left out here, a limb left unresolved there, the missing part doing more emotional work than a finished figure ever could. It is a tradition as old as sculpture itself, ancient marble and bronze figures that survived centuries missing an arm or a head, and somehow read as more human for it, not less. Stripped of a face, there is nothing left to perform. Just the real weight of the pose itself.

Collector's Note

A wall-mounted bronze, not a pedestal piece, Fragment is meant to be encountered the way it appears here, emerging from a wall rather than standing apart from one. Real presence in a room even at a modest scale.

"I left New York and moved to Mexico," where she studied at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Cuernavaca and found work producing monumental figurative sculptures, the real beginning of her own visual voice.

About the Artist

Gina Novendstern is an internationally recognized sculptor, born in New Jersey and based for most of her life in New York City. In the mid-1980s she moved to Mexico, studying at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Cuernavaca and working in a studio producing monumental figurative sculptures, the real beginning of her own visual voice. Her figures are never complete, heads, limbs, and fragments left deliberately unresolved.

In 2008, the MACAY Museum of Contemporary Art in Mérida, Mexico organized a three-month solo exhibition of twenty three of her sculptures, Interior Visions, Exterior Reflections. She has also represented the United States at the National Gallery of Fine Art in the Dominican Republic, and has taught workshops on sculpture patina and surface treatment in both New York and Mexico. Working across bronze, steel, wood, and stone, she often returns to the same figure or fragment across multiple pieces, letting it take on a different meaning each time.

Her work is held in museums, galleries, and private collections across the globe. Represented by Marcolina's Fine Arts Gallery and ESP Gallery Chelsea.
