Original mixed media on canvas by Greg Latch · Painter and mixed media artist · Available at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery, Tampa, Florida · Ships worldwide

A huge face fills the upper right of Me As Dali, pink and a little battered, with blue eyes, a tiny pointed goatee, and a waxed mustache that curls up at both ends. Small yellow stars are scattered across the skin. Below and around it the painting turns into a dense, tangled dream: a soft clock sags over an edge near the middle, a giant open hand reaches in from the upper left, a toothed red mouth opens at the right, and eyes, tiny figures, small crosses, and patterned panels are packed into every gap. The colors are warm yellows and pinks cut with teal and red, all outlined in dark, raised lines.

The mustache and the melting clock tell you who the painting is talking to. The title tells you who is doing the talking. Greg does not paint Dali from the outside. He puts himself in the role, a face that is part tribute and part costume, to see how it fits. The face is calm and a little amused, and everything under it is chaos, which is exactly how a lot of artists work.

The surface is as busy as the picture. The paint is thick and crinkled, built up in ridges, so the whole canvas feels like it could be peeled off the wall in layers. Give it time and you keep finding new little scenes in the corners, a figure here, a pair of eyes there, until the big face stops being the only thing you are looking at.

Collector’s Note

At 60 by 44 inches, Me As Dali is a large original for a wall with room to spare. It suits a studio, a collector with a love of surrealism, a creative office, or a living room where people like to linger and look. The raised, layered surface changes with the light and does not translate to a photograph, so we recommend a virtual viewing or a visit in person.

“It is about the concept of what the image can say in more than one way.”
Greg Latch

About the Artist

Greg Latch was born in Mississippi and studied acting and fine art at the University of Mississippi. He later worked as a portrait artist in Jackson Square in New Orleans, and in Tampa he spent years as a nurse in the city’s jails and a psychiatric hospital. He did not come to painting through galleries or art school. He came to it by watching people, and it shows.

For thirteen years he painted at Artist Unlimited alongside artists with master’s degrees from around the world, learned from master painter Ray Paul, and taught drawing with live models. He builds his surfaces with oils, markers, and a range of knives, layering until the canvas turns almost sculptural, and he works from spontaneous drawings and mismatched imagery.

His work sits between portraiture and abstraction, and he says himself that it is not really about the image. He was featured in the Persona exhibition at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery alongside Blake Emory, Guillo Pérez 3, and Mark Rendini. He lives and works in Tampa, Florida.
