A modern racing yacht, sail marked 12, cuts across a background built from blocky, pixelated color, more video game than sky. A chain of connected purple spheres, strung together with yellow lines like a molecular diagram, runs diagonally through the whole scene, and a striped beach ball floats in the upper corner like a small, off-brand planet. Tucked into the lower left, a circular inset holds an entirely different image, vintage tall ships rendered in sepia, a memory sitting inside the same frame as everything else.
Three completely different kinds of reality share this canvas at once: the physical history of sailing in that sepia inset, the microscopic architecture of the molecular chain, and the constructed, synthetic world of the pixel background and the beach ball standing in for a moon. Gurbacs has spent his career finding continuity between things that exist at different scales. Here the leap is stranger and more direct, between the historical, the biological, and the entirely imaginary, all genuinely occupying the same space.

About the Artist
John Gurbacs is a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow with over fifty years of continuous practice exploring the fractal geometry hidden inside nature, the recurring patterns that connect a tree branch to a bolt of lightning, or the rings of Saturn to the rings of water in a puddle.
His process begins in the field. He photographs construction debris, tropical foliage, microscopic patterns, and underwater scenes, then builds collages until a connection reveals itself between forms and scales. From there he draws, then paints, some pieces taking months to complete.
His work sits in the permanent collections of the Tampa Museum of Art, the Leepa Rattner Museum of Art, the Polk Museum of Art, and the USF Contemporary Art Museum, along with commissions for Tampa General Hospital, Holland and Knight, Tampa Electric, and the Volusia County Courthouse. He has completed five major public murals across Florida, including the Sulphur Springs Mural, the largest of his career.
