Original mixed media on board by Greg Latch · Painter and mixed media artist · Available at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery, Tampa, Florida · Ships worldwide
Two figures lean into each other in Stolen Image Series 2. The one in back sits upright and turned in profile, eyes lowered, with long brown hair pulled straight back and a touch of bright green on the eyelid. Her skin is built from layers of orange, gold, and coral hatching that glow against the pale, scratched silver background. In front of her, a second figure is seen from behind, dark hair pressed against her shoulder, the back and arm in hot red and pink, a thin white line tracing the edge of the shoulder. The tall board is cropped tight, so there is no room, no furniture, and no setting, only the two bodies.
The hatching is the main event. Each stroke is visible, laid down in the same direction and then crossed and layered until the skin turns from orange to gold to pink, and the scratched background makes the figures look lit from inside. The green eyelid is the single cool note, and it pulls your eye to a face that is looking away from you.
It is the second of three in Greg’s Stolen Image series, and like the first it works from a borrowed image, the pose, the closeness, the quiet, and then makes it his own by pushing the color and the line until the picture is no longer anyone else’s.

Collector’s Note
At 24 by 43 inches, Stolen Image Series 2 is a tall, narrow original that fits places a larger piece will not, like a stairwell, a hallway, a bedroom wall, or the gap beside a window. It hangs well on its own or with the other two in the series. The layered hatching glows differently in different light, so a virtual viewing or a visit in person shows far more than a photograph.

About the Artist
Greg Latch was born in Mississippi and studied acting and fine art at the University of Mississippi. He later worked as a portrait artist in Jackson Square in New Orleans, and in Tampa he spent years as a nurse in the city’s jails and a psychiatric hospital. He did not come to painting through galleries or art school. He came to it by watching people, and it shows.
For thirteen years he painted at Artist Unlimited alongside artists with master’s degrees from around the world, learned from master painter Ray Paul, and taught drawing with live models. He builds his surfaces with oils, markers, and a range of knives, layering until the canvas turns almost sculptural, and he works from spontaneous drawings and mismatched imagery.
His work sits between portraiture and abstraction, and he says himself that it is not really about the image. He was featured in the Persona exhibition at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery alongside Blake Emory, Guillo Pérez 3, and Mark Rendini. He lives and works in Tampa, Florida.
