Original mixed media on canvas by Greg Latch · Painter and mixed media artist · Available at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery, Tampa, Florida · Ships worldwide

Two eyes look out from a wall of thick, scraped paint in The Eyes Have It. The one on the left sits in a pink outline, dark pupil turned a little to the side. The one on the right is larger, ringed in hot orange and red, the white of it heavy with paint and the pupil fixed right on you. Everything around them is built from vertical strips and drips of brown, orange, red, pink, and cornflower blue, with patches of peach and olive green near the bottom that look like torn paper or old plaster. The paint is piled on so thick that the surface looks more dug than brushed.

The eyes are the only part of the painting that is clear, and that is what makes them work. You do not see a face. You see the eyes first, then the mess around them starts to look like it could be a face, or a crowd, or a wall full of people watching. The longer you stand there, the more it feels like you are the one being looked over.

The title is a play on the saying, and the painting takes it literally. Greg says his work is not really about the image, it is about what the image can say in more than one way, and here that is easy to feel. Are they watching, warning, or asking something? The paint does not tell you, and that gap is where people spend their time.

Collector’s Note

At 38 by 42 inches, The Eyes Have It is a mid-large original with a lot of presence for its size. The warm oranges and reds with a few cool blue breaks suit a living room, a studio, or a restaurant wall, and it does well in a room where people will stop and talk about it. The thick surface casts small shadows that shift with the light, so a virtual viewing or an in-person visit shows more than a photograph can.

About the Artist

Greg Latch was born in Mississippi and studied acting and fine art at the University of Mississippi. He later worked as a portrait artist in Jackson Square in New Orleans, and in Tampa he spent years as a nurse in the city’s jails and a psychiatric hospital. He did not come to painting through galleries or art school. He came to it by watching people, and it shows.

For thirteen years he painted at Artist Unlimited alongside artists with master’s degrees from around the world, learned from master painter Ray Paul, and taught drawing with live models. He builds his surfaces with oils, markers, and a range of knives, layering until the canvas turns almost sculptural, and he works from spontaneous drawings and mismatched imagery.

His work sits between portraiture and abstraction, and he says himself that it is not really about the image. He was featured in the Persona exhibition at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery alongside Blake Emory, Guillo Pérez 3, and Mark Rendini. He lives and works in Tampa, Florida.
