Original acrylic painting on wood panel by Greg Latch · Painter and mixed media artist · Available at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery, Tampa, Florida · Ships worldwide

Ybor Walk is a crowd painted on wood. The panel is made of vertical boards, and you can see the seams running down the picture, so the faces seem to be standing along a fence. Heads fill every board in ochre, olive, red, green, and blue, each one outlined in white. On the left a long, narrow red face with a small head balanced on top of it. In the middle a man in a cap looks sideways, and above him a face built out of stacked grids and windows stares straight out. A black cat with wide, startled eyes sits in the center right, a bearded man looks down from the far right edge, and loose eyes, mouths with teeth, and hands turn up in the gaps between them.

It feels like a walk because of how you read it. Your eye moves from board to board, the way you pass people on a sidewalk, catching a face, then another, then a cat, then something that might be a hand or might be an eye. Nobody is looking at the same thing. Some of them look at you, some look away, and a few are not entirely whole.

Greg painted it from his time living and working in Ybor City, and it reads like a street that is never empty. It is not a portrait of any one person. It is closer to the feeling of walking through a neighborhood where everyone has a story, and you only get a second with each one. The acrylic is flat and bold, so the colors hit fast and the faces stay with you after you look away.

Collector’s Note

At 39 by 26 inches and $1,450, Ybor Walk is one of the more approachable originals in Greg’s collection, a good place to start if you are new to his work. The colors are strong, so it can anchor a hallway, a den, an office, or a spot above a desk. The wood panel gives it real weight, so we recommend a virtual viewing or a visit in person to see the surface up close.

“It is about the concept of what the image can say in more than one way.”
Greg Latch

About the Artist

Greg Latch was born in Mississippi and studied acting and fine art at the University of Mississippi. He later worked as a portrait artist in Jackson Square in New Orleans, and in Tampa he spent years as a nurse in the city’s jails and a psychiatric hospital. He did not come to painting through galleries or art school. He came to it by watching people, and it shows.

For thirteen years he painted at Artist Unlimited alongside artists with master’s degrees from around the world, learned from master painter Ray Paul, and taught drawing with live models. He builds his surfaces with oils, markers, and a range of knives, layering until the canvas turns almost sculptural, and he works from spontaneous drawings and mismatched imagery.

His work sits between portraiture and abstraction, and he says himself that it is not really about the image. He was featured in the Persona exhibition at Marcolina’s Fine Arts Gallery alongside Blake Emory, Guillo Pérez 3, and Mark Rendini. He lives and works in Tampa, Florida.
